Understanding dreams

Cat Tracking To Understand A Dream

Have you ever “cat tracked” to recover a dream?

WOW! I did one a couple of nights ago, and learned a hell of a lot about where I am in my life, right now.

Cat tracking is what my Mum called it — going back, step by step, from where you are now to where you began. To understand how you got to here. Or how to find your lost car keys! It works for that, too.

What Did I Learn? Where Am I In Life, Right Now?

1. Stop worrying about money. I always have just enough.

2. I knew exactly where my car was parked, so I am on my path.

3. I am inclined to take unnecessary personal risks, which has triggered unhappy outcomes in the past.

4. I am still not comfortable with my physical body, post cancer surgery, in the company of men.

5. Men in bright floral Hawaiian shirts trigger a bad memory from the past, which happened at Burswood Casino.

6. I have escaped the “house” of the past in Bayswater. I live elsewhere now.

7. I had no job, so I have escaped the need to anchor my security in my old job at Metro Motors.

I guess you are never too old to learn something new.

Trying to understand my recurring dreams

After quite a few days of low motivation to undertake even the most mundane tasks, I decided to explore the meaning of some of my dreams.

  • Current and earlier dreams
  • Once offs, but vivid dreams
  • Recurring dreams
  • Uncomfortable dreams
  • Happy dreams
  • Naked dreams or fully clothed
  • Travelling dreams
  • Career dreams
  • Dreams about houses vs homes
  • Lucid dreams

Rather than looking for fortune telling answers, I was trying to really understand what’s going on in my head.

What I have discovered has surprised me. 99% of what’s happening in my dreams is about me — trying to understand myself.

That sounds rather vain, in a way. Why should I, at almost 80 years of age, still need to understand myself? I thought I had a good handle on that!

The quick answer is that I either :

*know myself and don’t necessarily like some of what I see, so I shut it down, but my subconscious keeps bringing it up.

or

*I have been so busy for such a long time, working, raising a family, caring for others, that I have never given myself the time and space to find out who I am.

As in ME, the person.

Not the daughter, wife, parent, caregiver, financial planner, or writer.

My life is completely different now.

For the first time in my adult life, apart from Splinter and Sophie, I do not have to physically care for anyone else.

* I am financially secure, albeit on a tiny, fixed income, with the aged pension.

* My home is secure, floods and tornadoes excluded.

* Despite some earlier setbacks, my health now is excellent.

* I have time for new hobbies if I choose them

Surely by now, I should be able to just relax, enjoy this static existence, and not be disturbed by my dreams.

And that is the nub.

Therein lies the rub.

It has become a static existence.

All these dreams are simply

*urging me,

*reminding me,

*taunting me,

*telling me

that I am not dead yet and I had better get up and “get some work in my hands” as my Dad would say.

Yet, I can be as fully empowered to do physical work as the next person. So, I am not sure that is the simple answer.

I remember reading the book “Be Brave and Use the Power of Praise” many years ago.

I wrote in the margin of one page: “lying under a tree on the riverbank in Como is not the same as lying under a palm tree in Bali”. There was a definite life triggering event behind that observation, later revealed in dreams which became poems.

My dreams are a time to remind myself, then, that if life is not as you like it, then you must get up and change it.

By changing your attitude. By changing your actions. By creating results by taking actions.

Maybe I do already know myself fairly well. We will see.

First to work out what it is that I want now, and then set about getting it.

Or first, to work out who I really am and then how to get what I want.

Maybe that will come to me, in a dream. When it does, I will tell you about it. Maybe you can start doing some cat tracking, too.
